Va néixer a Manlleu el 17 d’agost de 1958.

El 1981 es va llicenciar en Filosofia a la Universitat de Barcelona. El 1991 es va doctorar en Lògica a la Universitat de Califòrnia, a Berkeley, USA.

Ha estat investigador postdoctoral a la Universitat de Califòrnia, Berkeley, i al Centre de Recerca Matemàtica de Bellaterra. Ha estat professor a la Universitat de Califòrnia, Berkeley, la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, la Universitat Pompeu Fabra i la Universitat de Barcelona.

El seu camp d’investigació és la teoria de conjunts i la lògica matemàtica, temes en els que ha publicat una trentena d’articles de recerca en revistes internacionals i ha impartit nombroses conferències en congressos arreu del món.


Ha estat investigador invitat a UC Berkeley, Kobe
Univ., National Univ. of Singapore, Kurt Gödel Research Center (Viena), Univ.
Paris VII, CalTech, Mittag-Leffler Institut (Estocolm), Hebrew Univ.
(Jerusalem), Harvard Univ., etc. 


Fou el primer president de la European Set
Theory Society, 2007-11. 


Va ser Chairman de la xarxa de recerca europea INFTY
ESF-Research Networking Programme, 2009-14 i va ser Simons Foundation Fellow a
l’Isaac Newton Institute, Cambridge, UK, 2015. 


És director del Grup de Recerca
en Teoria de Conjunts de Barcelona (BCNSETS) i Investigador Principal del Grup
de Recerca Consolidat de Lògica.

Ha dirigit 7 tesis doctorals.


Col·labora amb prestigioses revistes internacionals : Princeton Companion to Mathematics,Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, The Journal of Symbolic Logic, Journal of the European Mathematical Society,Fundamenta Mathematicae….

Actualment viu a La Garriga i és professor d’investigació de la Institució
Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats (ICREA) i professor associat de la
Universitat de Barcelona.
